If your health has become compromised, you want answers and you want help. We understand that. Our work is very focused on providing answers and help, on finding and addressing the real, underlying causes of your health issues.
Unfortunately, common American medical practice is based mostly on suppression or control of symptoms. They want you to believe that if your symptoms are suppressed or controlled, you are in a state of health. Nothing could be further from the truth. You are only in a state of health when you are in a state of internal balance - which science calls HOMEOSTASIS:
1. COMPROMISED INTERNAL BALANCE = COMPROMISED HOMEOSTASIS = COMPROMISED HEALTH
2. NORMAL INTERNAL BALANCE = NORMAL HOMEOSTASIS = NORMAL EXCELLENT HEALTH
My medical training originated in Europe where I attended the premiere university medical college in Germany. We were properly taught to work with, not against, nature and the normal physiology of the body. We were taught that natural, non-toxic, non-invasive care is always the first response to health problems, and that toxic Rx prescription drugs and dangerous surgery are the very last of choices.
There is a lot to learn and to appreciate in why we use a different European approach to working with you, but below is a brief comparison of American versus European health care practices:
There is much more to understand and appreciate in all this, but this is a starting point. Please do not misunderstand, I have great respect for my American colleagues, they mean well, but, in my opinion, their training is lacking in many critical areas of health care. True health is more than the absence or control of symptoms, it is a state of real balance and well being you can count on.
Please feel free to discuss this openly with us, we encourage you to learn about your health and your health care options. We have lots more information to share with you, please ask. Serving you:
James Bowman, MD, ND, DNHC, DCP, FAAIM
Our doctor studied medicine at two of the premiere university medical schools in Germany, and then continued his studies in the United States. Dr. Bowman found this training in traditional medicine fascinating and important, but he grew increasingly concerned and frustrated with the way in which these scientific prinicples were applied to patients, to the point where he finally left the medical college just before completing his final exams.
For example, in college training pre-med program, you are advised to major in chemistry. Dr. Bowman questioned this and was told: "You need a chemistry major because you will be writing prescriptions for drugs." Dr. Bowman asked why, if medicine's goal is the restoration of health, one is not advised to have a pre-med major in biology instead, as biology is the core life science, and reflects how our bodies are put together and how they function. Dr. Bowman did choose to major in biology, with enough hours in chemistry to have a second major, but this showed him that the healing he wanted to study and provide to his patients was not from synthetic, toxic chemicals called prescription drugs, but rather from natural resouces which are safer, less expensive, and more aligned with healing. Subsequently, Dr. Bowman did complete the MD program, and received his MD diploma with specialty in Alternative Medicine from the International Open University College of Medicine in Sri Lanka, one of the worlds most highly recognized and accepted schools of integrative and alternative medicine. Their programs and degrees are recognized by the government of the United States. Traditional medicine is something Dr. Bowman has great respect for, it can save lives, but it has little to do with healing, and more to do with a strong emphasis on suppressing or controlling symptoms with drugs. One of the reasons we believe there is such a severe drug problem in our society, and in the world, is that we have been wrongly taught to believe that for every health problem there is a drug that will fix it. That is not true, you know that from simple logic and from seeing the society in which we live. Instead of living simple, healthy lifestyles, we live chaotic, stressful lives and then look away from nature, to the pharmaceutical labortory for chemicals to suppress our symptoms. This is going in the wrong direction, away from health and internal balance (HOMEOSTASIS) and into a further destructive pattern where health is compromised if not lost, and we become more and more physically and psychologically dependent on drugs. America is 37th among all the countries of the world regarding the health of its citizens, and yet Americans spend more money than any other country in the world on health care. Does this make sense to you? Does it concern or frighten you? It does us! It is also one of the underlying reasons why alternative medicine is so quickly evolving and becoming the preferred system of health care for more and more people each day. Last year millions more Americans received health care from alternative practitioners than from traditional doctors - there has to be a reason. Read on, you will discover it and what it can mean to your health, and the health of those you love, your family and friends. Do you think people who live like that are healthy? Do you want to be one of them? Or do you want a healthy life in a healthy body without dependence on drugs? Sometimes, for a particular individual's health needs, medications or even surgery are necessary, we understand this, but how often is someone given medications or recommended for surgery when other, safer, less costly, less dangerous methods would work better? We practice natural health care only. We practice very strictly within the scope of practice of our fields of expertise and training, but because of the broad and diverse training and background of Dr. Bowman, we are able to see many different patients for a wide variety of health needs, always focusing on one thing only: helping you restore your own imbalances in homeostasis using only natural methods. We do not attempt to treat or cure or diagnose any medical conditions, illnesses, or infirmities. We work only to help you identify imbalances in your natural, internal health, which is called your personal HOMEOSTASIS, and help you rebuild your own health using appropriate natural means. Describing a health imbalance by giving it the name of a disease does little to promote healing. Giving synthetic prescription medications, which do not heal, but only suppress symtoms, does little to promote healing. Putting toxic drugs into your body does little to promote healing. Our work is strictly about healing using natural methods only. The practice of traditional medicine we leave very strictly to those who choose to practice that form of health care. Although Dr. Bowman has much training from that area of science he does not practice medicine, and has absolutely no interest in applying his knowledge of health care to anything but helping you restore your own homeostasis. As Dr. Bowman explains to each new patient: "Please understand this clearly: I see patients who have cancer, but it does not mean I am or claim to be a medical oncologist, I am not. Often I see patients for digestive problems, but it does not mean I am or claim to be a medical gastrointestinal specialist, I am not. How is it then that I am able to help such a wide variety of health needs? Because like others in my field, I have studied, researched, and learned the foundational, underlying prinicples of health and healing and by working to help a person identify and correct those basic imbalances, many times health can be restored to a very high level. When we see a new patient and perform a new patient initial consultation, we frequently recommend further testing and evaluations in order to pinpoint exactly where the imbalances are and how best to address them, NOT attempting to treat or cure any symptoms or disease, again, ONLY to help that person restore a higher level of their own homeostasis. Think about it: In health care ONE SIZE DOES NOT FIT ALL - you are a unique human being with unique needs. If we recommend nutritional assistance to help your health, how do we know what to recommend or how to recommend it unless we perform some kind of test or evaluation? If you want "generic health" then you don't see us, go to a health food store, read a magazine article and take your chances. If you want information and recommendations which are appropritate to your individual, unique situation, then have the proper evaluations done, find out precisely what and where your imbalances are, and follow the recommendations we make based on the evaluations and your unique needs. For example: Dr. Joseph Mercola is an osteopathic doctor (DO), and maintains a family practice in Chicago. He is trained in general medicine, yet he sees and successfully helps many patients with very diverse health problems. Likewise, Dr. Matthias Rath, MD, lives and practices in Germany, and is trained in general medicine, but his research and his work allow him to help a large variety of patients including people with cancer and heart disease. Does this mean he is an oncologist or cardiologist? No, it means, like myself, Dr. Mercola, and others, that he understands and can work with the basic health-restoring prinicples which govern and influence healing. What are those principles? You will read about them in greater detail further on in this website, but they include detoxification, restoration of normal function for the liver, kidneys, adrenal glands, thyroid, hormonal rebalancing, pure, healthy diet and lifestyle, and good stress management. As noted above, my work refelcts a family practice. I see patients of all ages for a wide variety of health issues. Because we do not treat symptoms but look to identify and help you correct your own internal imbalances using only natural methods, we can see patients of all ages with many different health needs. My only service is to help you identify and correct, as completely as possible, your own internal health imbalances using natural methods whenever possible. In working with patients, I draw upon all the areas of medical training and knowledge which I have gained (traditional medicine, chiropractic medicine, naturopathic medicine, alternative medicine, and nutritional medicine), and use the safest, most specific ways to help each individual patient with their unique health needs, always based on our examinations and diagnostic procedures, which are state of the art. I work in close inter-professional communication with many tradtional medical doctors and praise their work for its quality, and have received many compliments back from them for helping patients whom they could not help using drugs and surgery. After leaving "traditional medical training," I studied Chiropractic Medicine, and was awarded four academic scholarships. I graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic with highest honors in 1983. After graduation, I completed a post-doctoral residency program with special advanced studies in nerve and joint injuries, as well as nutritional healing. I was also appointed as a teaching faculty member in the departments of clinical studies and patient care in the college's two community public care clinics, and I completed a residency program in post-doctoral studies. I taught senior doctoral students in the departments of spinal manipulation, radiology, physical examination and neurological diagnosis. Since that time I have completed extensive additional training in nutrition, homeopathy, herbal medicine, preventive and wellness care, and Naturopathic Medicine. After writing and passing the N-PLEX (*) examinations with honors, I was then awarded Board Certification as a Naturopathic Family Practitioner through the largest and most authoritative accrediting organization in America, and internationally, for Naturopathy, the American Naturopathic Medical Association. The ANMA has more than 4,000 active members and provides some of the most important ongoing scientific research and educational opportunities for Doctors of Naturopathy available anywhere. (*) N-PLEX examinations are given to and required of all candidates seeking to practice as Naturopathic Doctors. Whether a candidate attended Bastyr College, National College, Southwest College or Bridgeport College, or obtains training through other parallel medical opportunities, passing the same examination, the N-PLEX, is required for all Board Certified Naturopathic Doctors, including our Dr. Bowman. The ANMA is a recognized, established, and respected accrediting authority for naturopathy, with more than 4,000 naturopathic practitioner members. As a family practitioner, I regularly see many children for health problems such as recurrent ear infections, asthma, depression, anorexia, bulemia, failure to thrive syndrome, and ADD/ADHD, as well as many other childhood and adolescent health needs. We also perform sports, camp and school physical examinations for students of all ages. Each year I complete many hours in post-doctoral training in the newest methods in natural medicine, including working with physicians in Los Angeles who are specialists in this field, especially in herbal medicine for chronic illnesses, including cancer. Lastly, the reason for such a lengthy explanation of my background, training, and areas of expertise is simple: people searching for answers have questions, and although what they have received in terms of 'traditional modern American health care' may have not been satisfactory, they are unfamiliar with the alternatives. That is a very important part of the work I and my staff do with each patient on each visit: answer questions, give information, explain the work. Just because someone is dissatisfied with their health and their former health care, does not at all mean they are ready or willig to embrace something which is very different, people will only accept what they are receptive to, what they understand, and what they hold as valuable and important. To help them reach that point where they can make an informed, intelligent decision about what kinds of health care they want, we do our best to explain everything until they understand. Thanks, too, for YOUR understanding; we would be happy to speak with you anytime or to be of help to you, your family and friends, should you wish to pursue alternative health methods under our care. Our Staff: Mary Jones - Front Desk and Office Manager: Mary manages the clinic's front desk and overall office responsibilities. Her kind, friendly manner makes everyone feel welcome and comfortable. She has a gift of explaining complex issues in clear, understandable terms and everyone loves her thoughtfulness and genuine caring about our people. She will gladly answer your questions about our service.
SHERRY: Technical Assistant: Sherry is a very warm, kind and outgoing person who adds great talent and compassion to our office. She makes everyone feel welcome, comfortable, appreciated, and her thoroughness in her work is exceptional. You will enjoy working with her as she assists you with the Ion Cleanse detoxification therapy.
Types of Payment Accepted: Many times when people seek our advice or help they have the expectations that their traditional insurance pays for it - it doesn't. In Wisconsin, naturopathic health care services are not recognized by any insurance company, therefore no insurance claims may be submitted for our work. To do so would be insurance fraud, a felony offense, and we warn you in the strongest possible terms never to attempt to misinform, mislead or defraud an insurance company. Alternative health care unfortunately gets very little of the recognition it rightly deserves from most insurance plans. We are working very hard to change this, and our doctor, Dr. Bowman, is one of a very few select doctors with membership at the state and national levels in organizations which perform crucial research and also pursue legislative recognition of the safety and success of alternative medicine. Dr. Bowman is a Board Member of the Wisconsin Association for Health Freedom and the American Association for Health Freedom, and with his fellow board members, works long hours each week to help write and pass critical legislation to support your legal and insurance rights to alternative health care, but the battle is far from over. Emergency / After hours information: In case of emergency, I can be reached at my home/cell phone at 715.572.2057. If I am not available, please call your local emergency room. If you are from the Stevens Point area, please call Saint Michael's Hospital Emergency Room in Stevens Point at 715.346.5100 for assistance. |
